History of the Department

Institute of Pharmacy (Yangon) was established in 30^th January, 1992, at Thahton Street, Kamaryut Township. The Botany Course was commenced at the Institute of Pharmacy in academic year (1994 – 1995) with 50 matriculated students.The Department of Botany was run by U S.D. Parazent (M.Sc. in Botany), Lecturer and Head, and the teaching staff from the Department of Botany, Institute of Medicine (1).

When the Institute was transferred to Waibargi Road, North Okkalapa Township in May 2001, the Botany Department came under the guidance of Daw May Kyi Win (M.Sc. in Botany), Lecturer and Head and teaching staff of the Department of Botany, Institute of Medicine (2).

In January 2003, its own Department was established at Institute of Pharmacy (Yangon) and run by Daw Nu Nu Sein as a Lecturer and Head of the Department and the staff members according to the new set-up. After Daw Nu Nu Sein retired on 31^st December, 2017, Daw kyi Kyi Win run the Department as a Lecturer and Head of the Department in September 2018.

Botany is taught as a subject only to the first year students.

Departmental Objectives

At the end of the premedical course in Botany, the learner should be able to:

1. describe the characteristics of life and living processes (K)

2. explain how the basic requirements of human beings are being provided by plants (K)

3. describe the physiological changes in plants which are similar to other organisms (K)

4. recall the basic principles of heredity and apply it in solving elementary genetic

problems (K)

5. describe the reactions of living things to constantly changing environment (K)

6. acquire an understanding of patterns of responses made by organisms to stimuli of

their environments (K)

7. explain some herbal plants in Myanmar and their constituents, their uses in health care

purposes(K)

8. make accurate identification of cells and tissues of living plant materials (S)

9. perform and interpret laboratory tests and procedures (S)

10. make accurate identifications of medicinally important plants in relation to their

respective constituents and uses (S)

11. establish a habit of methodlogical scientific approach, namely, accurate observation

and experiments, and drawing of valid conclusion (A)

12. believe and accept the role of prevention in environmental pollution (A)

13. believe and accept that plants possess medicinal value (A)

About Department

History

The Institute of Pharmacy was first established in 30^th January, 1992 at Thathon Street, Kamayut Township, Yangon. At that time, the responsibility in teaching Biochemistry was taken over by Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Medicine 1, Yangon.
On 7^th May 2001, the Institute was moved to Waibargi, North Okkalapa and since then the Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Medicine 2, Yangon, took the responsibility in teaching Biochemistry from 2001 to 2010.
The independent Department was established in 2010.
In 2016, this Department was authorized by Department of Biochemistry, University of Medicine 2, Yangon.

Vision

To provide effective biochemistry course to undergraduate pharmacy student who will be able to apply pharmacological biochemistry knowledge and skill in their profession.

Mission

To produce pharmacists with sound knowledge in drug chemistry, their mechanism of cellular level and metabolism, pharmacogenomics, nutrition and environmental toxicity by encouraging the culture of scientific inquiry, leaving and critical thinking.

Departmental objectives

To provide the foundation knowledge required for study in both the molecular and cellular aspects of modern biology
To produce graduate who are not only equipped with the knowledge in all the modern aspects of Biochemistry, but are also aware of the particular needs of the society.
To enhance, all-round individual development imbibing profound character, integrity and values.
To promote an environment favorable for academic excellence.
To enable communication and distribution of subject knowledge through a wealth of theory and practical classes

History of the Department

The department of Pathology came into existence after the establishment of the University of Pharmacy (Yangon) in May, 2001. The department was first run by Prof. Dr. Aye Aye Myint who was the Head of Pathology Department, University of Medicine 2. Pathology is one of the subjects in the third year, B.Pharm course. It was started in (2001-2002) academic year.

Aim and Objectives

Aim

After graduation, the learner should be able to apply the concepts of pathology as supportive knowledge and skill in his/her profession as a Pharmacist

Departmental Objectives

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to

Acquire the knowledge of General Pathology and basic pathological processes with more emphasis on common diseases encountered in Myanmar (K)
Recognize the signs and symptoms of some important diseases so as to promote the prescription and rational use of drugs (K, S)
Perform the effective communication with health providers and the public regarding health matters in drug therapy (S)
Appreciate and apply the knowledge of fundamental pathology in clinical pharmacy (S, A)
Have awareness of the vital role of pathology in the field of health education and health promoting services (A)

History of Department

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was established by U Myint Oo, Lecturer and Head of Department, Institute of Pharmacy, Yangon, in 1991. U Myint Thein, Rector of the University of Pharmacy, Yangon, was Head of Department from 1995 to 2002. In early 2002, Professor Dr. Tha Hla Shwe, Rector of the University of Medicine (2), became Head of Department. In late 2002, Daw Yi Yi served as Associate Professor and Head of the Department from 2002 to 2010. Pharmaceutical Chemistry is offered as one of the subjects throughout all academic years of the undergraduate curriculum. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry introduced its Master’s program in 2003, followed by the launch of the Ph.D. program in 2013. These programs were designed to provide students with in-depth theoretical knowledge and research necessary to contribute to advancements in pharmaceutical sciences.

Departmental Objectives

After the course is completed, the student should be able to

explain the fundamental concepts of chemistry that deal with physicochemical properties, chemical reactions, and reaction mechanisms of pharmaceutical organic and inorganic compounds
describe the principles of chemical kinetics that are essential for prediction of a drug’s stability in pharmaceutical dosage forms
describe the principles and conduct the various qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques, including conventional and instrumental methods, which cover every aspect of quality control of pharmaceuticals starting from raw materials to finished products
explain the concepts of medicinal chemistry including drug discovery, design, and development from natural products and existing lead compounds
describe the knowledge related to identification, structure elucidation, structural activity relationship (SAR), the synthetic pathway and metabolic pathway of certain drugs
describe the knowledge of food chemistry including the chemistry of natural and synthetic foods, food additives, genetically modified foods, etc.
conduct scientific research in pharmaceutical chemistry
